Enjoying an archaic holiday.

Once a year a big fair comes to Melbourne for a week. It's called The Melbourne Show and at the Show you can buy any number of VERY expensive show bags that from what I gather mostly have lollies in them...Apparently, for a very long time the Thursday of the Melbourne Show was a State Holiday and every work place got it off to go frolic at the Show. Or something.

I am a little fuzzy on the details.

In 1994, the state government was all 'this is ridiculous we have enough days off work, this is no longer a holiday VICTORIA.' Which frankly seems a little bit mean, and my guess is that the Victorian public promptly voted this man out of office. But that's speculation.

This blog isn't about facts.

However, it seems that my fair employer has deemed that we should still get Show day off. But (bonus!) we can take ANY day off this week to celebrate all that is the Melbourne Show. Praise Moses because we all know how much I hate my job (I really never thought I was going to be one of those people who complained about work all the time...even when I went door to door asking people for money I didn't whine this much...in fact, I am not sure I whined at all - I think I enjoyed it...Whoa whoa whoa that can't be right).

Anyway, my point is that I have a long weekend ahead of me, and I am so ready for some serious relaxation. Of course, I've also got a lot planned. I am going to a climate change workshop tomorrow, the Grand Final for Aussie Rules Football is on Saturday (and you know Inspector Climate and I will be watching it...while hopefully Collingwood loses...fingers crossed!), and on Sunday we're going to Ballarat to watch some cycling race. Oh yeah, and applying for new jobs...so maybe it won't be so relaxing after all.

I am a little sad I won't be getting any cotton candy fairy floss (how cute are Australians?)....

  1. Enjoy your long weekend! sounds like lots of fun planned... apart from the job hunt. Hopefully weather in Melbs is better than in NZ at the mo, they are having a rough time. We mix cotton candy and fairy floss by calling it candy floss!

  2. I am so glad you said you hope Collingwood loses. I love the Saints. Basically I love Nick Riewoldt.

In WA we get Monday off. That is seriously cruel to not let Victoria have a long weekend. Your boss at least sounds like a normal human being.

The Perth Royal Show starts this weekend too. I'm not going though. So eat some fairy floss for me and go on a scary ride and pat a tiny horse! I expect you to report back telling me you did each of these tasks so I can live vicariously through you. :-)

  3. Kiwi in france - Candy floss? I LOVE IT. Today was the first day that really felt like Spring.

    Bali Villas - Thanks!

MissLiv - Inspector climate goes for the Saints (I am a carlton girl, if I can even claim to have a team)...and everyone hates Collingwood right?

I didn't actually go to the show. So I can't report back. boo!

  4. I'm currently looking for one of those jobs that I can whine and complain about because honestly the way I see it is that is a novelty at this point!

    Enjoy your mini vacay:)
