Updated! NaBloPoMo day 18: Pumpkin Icecream Experiment

I've been having a craving for something pumpkin-y for the past couple of weeks.  It's the combination of my homesickness and the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday which feels so out of place right now in Australia as summer is nearly upon us!

Anyway, the point is I woke this morning thinking I was going to make pumpkin pie. But it's 91 degrees out, and slaving in the kitchen didn't seem like a great idea.  So, using some inspiration from Smitten Kitchen and some experimenting, I decided to make ice cream.  It's in the machine as we speak whirling away.  I'll let you know tomorrow how tasted.

But right now, I'll tell you how I made it.

 So using Smitten Kitchen's method to make a super smooth pie...

I took some homemade pureed frozen pumpkin I had in the freezer and put it on the stove to defrost it.

Then in a small bowl I added 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, 1/2 a teaspoon of ginger, and 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg.

Once the pumpkin was well defrosted (not pictured below), I added the spices and a tablespoon of molasses to it and let it bubble like lava for about 5 minutes while I stirred occasionally.

Then, I took it off the heat and added 1 cup of milk, and 2 cups of cream.  I combined it well and then let it cool in the fridge for several hours.

After it had chilled for several hours, I got my blender out dumped in one can of sweetened condensed milk, a splash of vanilla, and the pumpkin mixture and blended it together.

 Now it's in the ice cream maker and if my little taste of the mixture is anything to judge it by it's going to taste like pumpkin pie ice cream.  DELICIOUS.

Updated:  It was delicious. It tasted like pumpkin pie and was smooth and silky.  It was seriously fabulous.  Even Inspector Climate quite enjoyed it, which is surprising because, from my experience, most Australians think pumpkin in sweet things is just plain weird. Pumpkin pie? That sounds GROSS.  However, all that have tried it, loved it.


  1. That sounds pretty amazing!! I've never made ice cream. I thought about giving it a go this summer, but I'm not sure I'm brave enough to try it without an ice cream making!

  6. This sounds incredible! The self-serve frozen yogurt place by my house had pumpkin pie as a flavor last week and it was to die for!
