I've never been a big fan of umbrellas. And I think that's because where I grew up when it rained it was often cold so you would've needed a jacket as well. Raincoats were my friend.
But now in Melbourne, it's not often cold AND rainy. So, I've started carrying around a small pocket umbrella in case there is a rainy day when I don't bring my raincoat (because hey, small umbrellas are smaller than a bulky raincoat to carry around everyday - who knew?)
After surgery, when I was confined to my couch, a coworker came over one day to talk about work and it started raining so I let her borrow my umbrella.
This is an important life lesson: people do not return umbrellas.
It has rained all this week in Melbourne and while I've been happy to be wearing my rain coat that protects me from both the rain and the wind - now I find myself missing my little umbrella that fit so perfectly in the pocket of my backpack.
