I had never been before, so before we journeyed out into the hills of Melbourne I did a bit of research about the zoo. For extra bucks you can have a unique zoo experience to suit your every desire (I know it sounds like I'm selling the zoo here, but this post is not sponsored, I just think it's cool!). You could spend the big dollars and have a close encounter with a platypus (my favourite animal) or for small dollars ($10) you could have a 'magic moment' with the fur creature of your choice.
My heart pounded as I read the options. I could hang with a kangaroo, get up close with a koala, Or. OR touch two baby wombats. Sold.
Before I could have my magic moment, we had to find the wombats. Naturally, we got distracted by Crap Man. The Zooper Hero encouraging us all to wipe for wildlife with recycled toilet paper.
And then it was the moment. The moment of all moments - the magic moment. I was coming face to face with BABY WOMBATS. I'm sorry for so many pictures...but seriously, they were too cute. I'm always a bit torn...does one pet the animals knowing that they shouldn't be domesticated, but also that they're taking one for the team to protect their habitats and fellow animal friends...
It's hard to debate the decision when you're faced with this:
"Well, hello. I'm adorable"
And during this magic moment, I succumbed and pet the baby wombats, c'mon! Wouldn't you? Tummy scratches? Yes please.
Can you even stand it?
Of course, the cuteness didn't stop ... Meet the adorable koala.
The echidna!
And one more adorable koala.
Two of my favourite things...cute animals and this guy!
What did you get up to over the weekend?
Longtime reader, infrequent (if ever commenter) yadda yadda ... am also a Yank expat in Melb, FWIW. I got stung by an ant (I think) last weekend whilst camping on the Buffalo River and it is still bothering me so I was Googling things that bit and sting in Aus ... did you know that the male platypus is venomous?! Following your magic moment with a fun [weird] fact!
ReplyDeleteI'm squirming from the sheer amount of adorable content of this post (and the ridiculous amount of jealousy it's producing)!!

What is it about marsupials that makes them substantially cuter than all other animals??? I had no clue baby wombats were so cute. I'm with Krysten, I totally want a baby wombat now.
ReplyDeleteI need a wombat. Stat.
ReplyDeleteDofWhy, I love that you thought of me :)
ReplyDeleteOk, so this post is probably my favourite of all time on decoybetty. I was reading it on my shitty smartphone on the TGV yesterday, and was trying to suppress the SQUEEs from the stone-faced Frenchies all around me. I won't lie - I was overcome by a wave of jealousy that made me want to get off the TGV and take another one to the airport and fly directly to Australia. I want to go to there.
Koalas are my second favourite animals (after otters) and it is MY DREAM IN LIFE to hold one and make cooing sounds at it. I got to hold a baby otter at an animal sanctuary in Thailand back in June, and it made my life. Forget graduating uni and getting married, holding that squirmy ball of cuteness is what I will remember on my deathbed.
Thank you for this post and these pictures!
I would love to comment on this, but I am currently dead from an overdose of cute.
ReplyDeleteOMG I had no idea baby wombats were so adorable!! Love it!

Baby wombats are SOOOOOO cute. I "met" one at a national park once, it was startled to see me and started to run away but dozed off during its efforts. Hehe! This looks like a fun day out for you.
